INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the Support People with Disability in Community Participation & Social Inclusion course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in supporting people with disability to participate in community life, build meaningful social connections and experience genuine inclusion, while working within person-centred, strengths-based and human-rights principles.
Supporting community participation and social inclusion involves starting with the person—their interests, skills, needs, abilities and preferences—and not with services or programs. It requires you to consult with the person to understand what community engagement looks like for them, recognise and accommodate cultural, religious and personal identity needs, and work within individualised plans to select community options that reflect their documented goals and preferences. You must be able to identify and access community resources, programs, agencies, transport services, aids and equipment that match individual needs, and provide tailored information about community participation options, networks and services in ways the person can understand, use and act on.
The course assessment focuses on your ability to support practical, real-world participation and connection. You will be required to demonstrate how you support different people with disability to choose community options based on their skills and interests, and assist them to access these in line with organisational requirements and duty of care. The assessment will also examine how you create and support opportunities for social connections, shared interests, work and other forms of participation that help build ongoing community networks, and how you support the person’s use of assistive technologies to enable and enhance participation, independence and inclusion in everyday settings.
This assessment will also confirm your ability to monitor, review and improve the support you provide over time. You will need to show how you monitor the person’s level of engagement in community and social networks, seek feedback from the person and others on the support provided, and recognise physical, personal, systemic and attitudinal barriers that limit participation and inclusion. The assessment will explore how you collaborate with the person (and your supervisor where required) to identify and implement strategies to address or remove these barriers, identify gaps in assistive technology or support, and raise these appropriately, including where advocacy or reasonable adjustments may be required.
You will also be assessed on how you work safely and accountably within organisational and legal frameworks, including reviewing and adjusting community participation and social inclusion strategies over time in response to outcomes, feedback and changing needs. This includes demonstrating that you work within your own role boundaries, organisational policies, procedures and referral pathways, while accurately documenting support provided, barriers identified, and participation outcomes in line with record-keeping requirements.
By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements of supporting people with disability in community participation and social inclusion, including applying person-centred and rights-based principles, linking people with appropriate community resources, enabling use of assistive technologies, addressing barriers and documenting your work effectively—confirming your readiness to contribute to more inclusive, connected and participatory community life for people with disability.
