INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Plan & Manage Daily Functions in Home-Based Child Care course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in planning and delivering agreed home-based child care functions by clarifying care requirements with primary carer(s), establishing clear role expectations and boundaries, and then implementing daily routines and care responses that support children’s development, safety, wellbeing and family requirements within legal, organisational and privacy obligations.

Planning and managing daily functions in home-based child care involves coordinating day-to-day care in a private home environment where routines, expectations and care decisions must be negotiated with families and applied consistently. Home-based care requires structured communication with primary carer(s), accurate understanding of each child’s needs from babies through to children up to 12 years of age, and practical capability to manage health, safety, nutrition, sleep and supervision within a domestic setting. This work is important because children’s safety, wellbeing and development rely on predictable care and risk controls, and families depend on clear boundaries, confidentiality and reliable responses when circumstances change or concerns arise.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to clarify the specific care to be provided for each child, establish agreed boundaries and expectations with families, and translate those agreements into practical daily routines, activities and care responses. You will be required to demonstrate how you work collaboratively with primary carer(s) to plan care that meets children’s developmental needs, and how you apply consistent review and renegotiation processes so that care provisions remain clear, current and appropriate as children’s needs, family circumstances and daily conditions change.

This assessment will confirm your understanding of how to gather information from primary carer(s) to clarify home-based care requirements, consult to confirm role expectations, role limitations and agreed boundaries, and identify each child’s specific needs to plan daily routines, activities and care responses collaboratively. It will also assess your ability to establish and confirm processes for reviewing or renegotiating care provisions, plans and concerns with primary carer(s), and to provide care that supports children’s developmental needs across babies through to children up to 12 years of age within home-based care standards, ensuring decisions remain aligned to agreed expectations and the child’s wellbeing.

You will also be assessed on your capability to implement health and safety practices across all daily care functions using risk management strategies and duty of care responsibilities, and to apply agreed reporting processes, organisational procedures and child protection obligations when health, safety or wellbeing concerns arise. This includes delivering culturally responsive care that supports the family’s cultural, spiritual and value base while maintaining respectful practice, maintaining confidentiality and managing family information securely in line with legislation and service requirements, and applying legal and operational requirements relevant to home-based care including work health and safety, behaviour support procedures, insurances and organisational policies and procedures. The assessment will also examine your ability to plan and implement safe nutrition and meal provisions in line with national guidelines including hygiene and food safety, identify and manage medical conditions and associated risks including allergy and anaphylaxis response and asthma support requirements, establish safe sleep and rest routines for babies and toddlers, manage the safety of the physical environment and daily activities including excursions and travel situations and basic home fire safety controls, and respond appropriately to unforeseen circumstances through consultation, documentation, prompt communication and daily review and modification of care plans based on ongoing consultation.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can clarify and negotiate home-based care requirements with primary carer(s), establish and work within agreed role expectations and boundaries, plan and deliver daily routines that support children’s development from infancy to 12 years, implement safety and duty of care controls across daily functions, apply reporting and child protection obligations when concerns arise, provide culturally responsive and confidential care, meet legal and operational requirements including WHS and insurance obligations, manage nutrition, food safety, sleep and medical risks appropriately, maintain a safe home environment including travel and fire safety considerations, and adapt responsibly to unforeseen circumstances through consultation, documentation and ongoing review—confirming your readiness to plan and manage daily functions in home-based child care.
