INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the Recognise & Report Children & Young People at Risk course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in recognising indicators that children, young people and families may be at risk of abuse or neglect, gathering and documenting information accurately and objectively, and then following required organisational and legislative reporting processes while maintaining privacy, confidentiality, duty of care and ethical practice.
Recognising and reporting children and young people at risk involves being able to identify the signs, indicators and dynamics of harm, including domestic violence, physical abuse, emotional or psychological abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, parental harm and pre-natal harm. This work requires practitioners to understand how risk and protective factors can vary across different children and young people, and how trauma can affect behaviour, communication and wellbeing. It is important because timely recognition and appropriate reporting can reduce ongoing harm, support access to protective responses, and ensure services meet their responsibilities to safeguard children and young people in a way that is lawful, ethical and aligned to role boundaries.
The course assessment focuses on your ability to observe and recognise risk indicators, accurately differentiate types and dynamics of abuse and neglect, and apply child-focused information gathering techniques that are safe, respectful and non-leading. You will be required to demonstrate how you establish rapport, use active listening, and ask open questions appropriately, while maintaining professional boundaries and understanding your duty of care responsibilities when concerns arise.
This assessment will confirm your understanding of how to collect, record and document signs and indicators of abuse accurately and factually in line with legislative requirements and organisational policies and procedures, and how to maintain privacy and confidentiality when documenting and storing records relating to children and young people at risk. It will also assess your ability to apply duty of care responsibilities and role boundaries when identifying, responding to and documenting risk of harm concerns, ensuring that information is handled professionally and that actions remain within the scope of your role while meeting required reporting obligations.
You will also be assessed on your capability to interpret and follow organisational procedures for reporting children and young people at risk, including required documentation and reporting steps, and to report risk of harm indicators using the correct reporting mechanism in line with Commonwealth and state or territory legislative reporting requirements. This includes applying knowledge of the child protection system and reporting protocols, including expected responses to reports and interagency policies relevant to your job role, and identifying protective and risk factors for different groups, including age, gender, disability, culture and sexuality, when assessing concerns. The assessment will also examine your ability to recognise the impact of risk of harm and trauma on children and young people, apply appropriate child-centred responses aligned to safe practice expectations, recognise and uphold the rights of children and young people including key aspects of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, apply ethical decision-making principles and ethical obligations relevant to your role, and identify and report ethical concerns such as conflicts of interest and boundary issues in line with organisational procedures.
By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can recognise and differentiate indicators and dynamics of abuse and neglect, gather information using child-focused and non-leading approaches, document concerns accurately and objectively while maintaining privacy and confidentiality, apply duty of care and role boundaries appropriately, follow organisational and legislative reporting requirements using correct mechanisms, understand how the child protection system and interagency protocols operate in relation to reports, consider relevant risk and protective factors and trauma impacts, uphold the rights of children and young people, and apply ethical decision-making and reporting processes for ethical concerns—confirming your readiness to recognise and report children and young people at risk in line with legal, organisational and ethical obligations.
