COURSE OVERVIEW:
Welcome to the Principles of Adult Learning course. This program will equip you with the knowledge, frameworks, and practical strategies needed to design and deliver effective training for todayโs diverse adult learners. You will explore who adult learners are, how they differ from younger learners, the assumptions that underpin adult learning theory, and the principles that guide meaningful, relevant, and transformative learning experiences. This course also examines learning styles, motivational drivers, instructional design considerations, and facilitation techniques that support engagement, inclusivity, and long-term skill development.
This course begins by examining what is special about todayโs adult learners, followed by a comparison between the andragogical model and the pedagogical model. You will explore the assumptions that underlie the pedagogical model, how and why people learn, and the assumptions behind the andragogical model. This section explains how adult learners are self-directed, how they bring personal and professional experiences into training, and how adults become ready to learn when they perceive a clear need to know or do something. You will explore why adults want immediate, real-world applications and how they are motivated to learn. This section concludes with an in-depth exploration of the principles of adult learning, various learning styles, and available learning style assessments. You will also learn how to determine your own learning style, understand the six perceptual modalities, recognise factors that affect learning speed, and prevent cognitive overload through thoughtful design.
The next learning area focuses on instructional strategies and learning environments. You will explore strategies that support the design, development, and delivery of adult training, and how to apply learning principles to create effective experiences. This section explains how to create a rich learning environment, the impact of the changing training landscape, and the importance of addressing diversity issues thoughtfully. You will explore how to manage age differences, meet the needs of older adults, and connect meaningfully with younger participants. This section also examines how to accommodate gender differences, cultural differences, and the needs of participants with disabilities to ensure inclusive and equitable learning opportunities. You will also explore key considerations when planning training sessions, including structure, accessibility, timing, purpose, and relevance.
A final learning area focuses on debunking adult learning myths and reinforcing evidence-based insights. You will explore the 12 facts about adult learning, how misconceptions impact training design, and how adopting a learner-centred mindset ensures that training is practical, engaging, and aligned with real-world requirements.
By the end of this course you will be able to understand adult learning theory, design training aligned with adult needs, accommodate diversity, create accessible learning experiences, prevent cognitive overload, and engage adult learners using principles that promote motivation, relevance, and long-term retention.
