COURSE OVERVIEW:

Welcome to the Confident Workplace Body Language course. This program will equip you with the knowledge and practical insight needed to recognise, interpret, and use non-verbal communication effectively in workplace environments. You will develop an understanding of how body language shapes meaning, influences relationships, strengthens leadership presence, and impacts professional credibility. Throughout the course, you will explore facial expressions, gestures, posture, eye behaviour, and non-verbal elements of speech, learning how to communicate with confidence, clarity, and intention.

This course begins by examining what body language is and why it holds such importance in the workplace. You will explore the importance of eye contact in non-verbal communication, what we do with our eyes, and how eye behaviour works to our advantage in professional interactions. This section also explains why eye contact is a significant body language skill, the different uses of eye contact, and what our pupils can teach us about engagement, interest, and emotional state. You will explore the rules of eye grammar, the concept of the mind’s eye and NLP, and how your eyes convey information about the way you are thinking, processing information, and responding to others.

The next area focuses on the significance of facial expressions and the universal aspects of facial communication. You will explore the universality of the smile and the “eyebrow flash” as signals of recognition and greeting, and examine the power of the face in non-verbal communication. This section also introduces the range of facial expressions, how faces influence first impressions, and how we talk with our faces through micro-movements that communicate emotion, intention, or hesitation.

A further section explores head movements, their meanings, and their role in social interaction. You will examine how head movements signal reflections, thoughts, and feelings, and the importance of head talk when listening and communicating. This section also introduces what the head nod signifies, the purposes head movements serve, and how subtle shifts in head position can strengthen rapport, indicate understanding, or convey uncertainty.

The program then examines the significance of gestures and body movements in communication. You will learn about cultural differences in gesture meanings, the classification of gestures, and the contribution of Desmond Morris and his gesture maps to understanding non-verbal behaviour. This section also introduces gesture psychology, the use of gestures in self-expression, and how deliberate or unintentional movements can reinforce or contradict spoken messages.

The next area focuses on posture and stance as essential components of body language. You will explore the role of posture in communication, how posture reflects your state of mind, and the main kinds of posture observed in workplace interactions. This section also examines the give-aways associated with postural body image, how attitudes and status are reflected in the stances we take toward others, and how posture influences perceptions of confidence, authority, and openness.

The final learning area examines non-verbal signals within speech and overall communication. You will explore why non-verbal signals can be just as significant as words, why non-verbal aspects of speech—such as tone, pace, volume, rhythm, and pauses—play a significant role in body language, and how these elements shape meaning and intention. You will also examine how to avoid non-verbal ambiguous signals, ensuring that your body language, vocal cues, and spoken words work together to project clarity, confidence, and professionalism.

By the end of this course you will be able to understand and apply the key elements of workplace body language, use non-verbal communication to build trust and rapport, interpret the signals of others more accurately, adjust your posture, gestures, and facial expressions to enhance your professional presence, and avoid mixed or confusing signals that may undermine your message.
