INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the Apply Infection Prevention & Control Practices in Work Settings course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in recognising infection risks in your work environment and applying safe, effective infection prevention and control practices in line with relevant standards, guidelines and organisational procedures.
Infection prevention and control in the workplace involves more than following a checklist of tasks; it is a systematic approach to identifying infection risks associated with your own role and work environment, understanding the roles and responsibilities of yourself and others, and applying appropriate control measures to minimise those risks. It requires an understanding of how infection can be transmitted, the role of risk assessment and risk management, and the importance of clear communication and documentation when infection risks and control strategies are identified. A strong infection prevention and control culture protects workers, clients, visitors and the wider community, and supports compliance with legislation, standards and organisational expectations.
The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret and apply infection prevention and control requirements in real work settings. You will be required to demonstrate how you identify infection risks and hazards in your area of responsibility, explain the roles and responsibilities of self and others in relation to infection prevention and control, and describe the control measures used to minimise infection risk, including risk assessment and risk management processes. The assessment will also examine your understanding of effective communication and documentation practices when infection risks are identified and control measures are implemented.
This assessment will confirm your understanding of core infection prevention practices, including personal hygiene, safe respiratory and cough etiquette, and hand hygiene principles and procedures such as the “5 moments” and appropriate product selection. You will be required to show how you select, correctly use and dispose of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), follow environmental cleaning procedures, and safely manage general and contaminated waste. The assessment will also explore your knowledge of applying standard and transmission-based precautions, including when enhanced precautions are required to manage specific infection risks.
You will also be assessed on how you respond to incidents and breaches in infection prevention and control, including identifying, responding to and reporting potential or actual breaches, and taking immediate actions to minimise contamination of people, materials and equipment following exposure. This includes demonstrating your understanding of procedures for managing spills and exposure to blood and body fluids, distinguishing and managing clean and contaminated zones, and ensuring the safe storage of materials and equipment. In addition, you will need to show how you record, report and store infection control incidents and related documentation in line with organisational policies and procedures, supporting traceability, review and continuous improvement.
By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements of infection prevention and control in work settings, including identifying and managing infection risks, implementing appropriate control measures, practising effective personal and hand hygiene, using PPE correctly, responding to breaches and exposures, and maintaining accurate infection control documentation—confirming your readiness to contribute to a safe, compliant and infection-aware workplace.
