INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the Apply Safe Work Practices for Direct Client Care course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in working safely in direct client care environments, in line with work health and safety (WHS) legislation, organisational policies and accepted safe work practices.
Safe work practices in direct client care involve consistently applying WHS principles to everyday tasks so that both clients and workers are protected from harm. This includes understanding the role of WHS in client care settings, following workplace WHS policies, procedures and instructions, and being able to identify existing and potential workplace hazards and report them appropriately. It also requires recognising client-related risk factors and behaviours of concern, taking safe action to manage those risks, implementing risk control measures to minimise hazards, and reporting incidents, injuries and near misses according to workplace procedures so that learning and improvement can occur.
The course assessment focuses on your ability to apply safe work practices in practical client care scenarios. You will be required to demonstrate how you follow safe manual handling procedures and work instructions when completing client care tasks, identify manual handling hazards and apply suitable control measures to minimise risk. The assessment will also examine your understanding of infection prevention and control in daily work, including applying standard and additional precautions, identifying infection risks and responding appropriately to breaches in infection control practices.
This assessment will confirm your understanding of how to participate in WHS systems and continuous improvement processes in your workplace. You will need to show how you contribute to WHS consultation, safety meetings, inspections and improvement activities, and how you support the development and implementation of safe work policies and procedures in your work area. In addition, you will demonstrate your ability to follow workplace emergency procedures and respond safely to simulated or actual emergencies, while maintaining awareness of your own stress and fatigue levels and accessing support or debriefing when required.
By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements of safe work practice in direct client care, including following WHS procedures, identifying and controlling hazards, using safe manual handling and infection control techniques, engaging in WHS consultation and emergency response, and maintaining your own capacity to work safely—confirming your readiness to provide direct client care in a manner that protects both clients and colleagues from preventable harm.
