INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Facilitate Strengths-Based Skills Development for People with Disability course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in supporting people with disability to build and use skills through strengths-based, person-centred and rights-based practice.

Strengths-based skills development in disability support involves recognising the person as the expert in their own life and focusing on their abilities, preferences and aspirations rather than deficits or limitations. It requires a clear understanding of the principles of strengths-based, person-centred and rights-based practice, and the roles and responsibilities of support workers, supervisors, families, carers and health professionals in contributing to skills development. It also depends on being able to observe and contribute to assessing a person’s current skills, competencies, preferences and goals, and to support the engagement of family, carers and chosen others in assessment and development processes where this is wanted by the person.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret and apply individualised plans and skills development strategies in real support contexts. You will be required to demonstrate how you work with the person to identify personal strengths and plan goals for ongoing skills development, and how you identify and organise resources, tools, equipment and learning opportunities that complement the person’s strengths. The assessment will also examine your ability to use positive approaches, active support and constructive feedback to encourage skill use and growth in daily life, support incidental and experiential learning in real-life situations, and adapt your support, in consultation with the person and others, to maximise independence, participation and engagement.

This assessment will confirm your understanding of effective communication and inclusion in strengths-based skills development, including communicating effectively with people with disability using appropriate strategies, prompts and supports for learning. You will be required to show how you recognise and address barriers to participation, learning and inclusion, including devaluation and discrimination, and how you apply legal and ethical requirements in skills development such as human rights, dignity of risk, privacy and duty of care. The assessment will also explore your ability to complete, maintain and store skills development documentation and reports in line with organisational policies, ensuring that records are accurate, timely and respectful of confidentiality.

You will also be assessed on how you work collaboratively and review practice over time, including working alongside the person and others to review skills development strategies and outcomes, and adjusting approaches in response to progress, changing needs and feedback. This includes demonstrating that you can reflect on your own role in supporting skills development, seek guidance when required, and contribute to continuous improvement in strengths-based, person-centred practice within your service.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements of facilitating strengths-based skills development for people with disability, including working within individualised plans, partnering with the person and their supporters, using positive and inclusive learning approaches, addressing barriers and upholding legal and ethical obligations—confirming your readiness to support people to build skills that enhance independence, participation and quality of life.
