INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the Implement Person-Centred Behaviour Supports in Disability Care course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in implementing person-centred, human-rights-based behaviour supports for people with disability, in accordance with individualised behaviour support plans, organisational policies and relevant legislative and regulatory frameworks.
Implementing person-centred behaviour supports begins with a clear understanding of the person-centred and human-rights-based foundations of positive behaviour support. You are expected to understand and work directly from individualised behaviour support plans, including your specific responsibilities as a support worker. The assessment will examine how you support activities of daily living in ways that promote positive, adaptive behaviour, recognising and describing behaviours of concern as outlined in the plan, and reviewing the context in which these behaviours occur—what happens before, during and after the behaviour. You will also need to identify environmental, emotional, health, medication and social factors that influence behaviour, and recognise indicators of unmet needs at systemic, structural, individual, relational and cultural levels that may drive behaviours of concern.
The course assessment focuses on your practical application of positive behaviour support in day-to-day work. You will be required to demonstrate how you implement positive behaviour support strategies and proactive lifestyle enhancement approaches that build on the person’s strengths, interests and preferences. This includes working safely with behaviours of concern by applying WHS requirements, risk minimisation strategies and appropriate responses to critical incidents, while understanding the nature and implications of restrictive practices. The assessment will explore your knowledge of human rights safeguards, the strict requirements for any authorised use of restrictive practices, and your responsibility to prioritise non-restrictive, positive and preventative approaches at all times.
This assessment will also confirm your ability to operate within organisational and regulatory systems for behaviour support. You will need to show that you follow organisational policies and procedures for intervention, notification, referral and reporting in relation to behaviours of concern, and that you communicate effectively with the person to minimise behaviours of concern and support engagement, participation and choice. The assessment will examine how you monitor, record and report changes in the person’s needs and behaviours, as well as the effectiveness of behaviour support strategies, and how you complete, maintain and store behaviour support documentation in line with organisational, legislative and regulatory requirements to ensure accuracy, confidentiality and accountability.
You will also be assessed on your capacity to maintain a professional, ethical and reflective approach to behaviour support work. This includes maintaining professional role boundaries, applying relevant codes of conduct, and recognising the impact of structural and systemic issues—such as discrimination, poverty and differential access to resources—on behaviour and support needs. You will be expected to show how you use this understanding to inform your day-to-day practice, seek guidance and supervision where required, and contribute to behaviour support that is safe, rights-based and genuinely person-centred.
By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements of implementing person-centred behaviour supports in disability care, including understanding and using behaviour support plans, analysing behaviour in context, implementing positive and preventative strategies, working safely with behaviours of concern, meeting documentation and reporting obligations, and practising within professional, legal and ethical boundaries—confirming your readiness to support people with disability in ways that uphold their rights, dignity and quality of life.
