INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Manage WHS Policies, Procedures & Programs for Legislative Compliance course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in applying work health and safety (WHS) legislation in the workplace and managing WHS policies, procedures and programs so that your work area meets its legal obligations and provides a safe, healthy working environment.

Managing WHS for legislative compliance involves understanding how key provisions of WHS laws translate into day-to-day expectations for PCBUs, managers, supervisors and workers, and how organisational WHS policies, procedures and programs give practical effect to those obligations. It requires the ability to communicate legal requirements, hazards and risk controls clearly to work teams, support meaningful consultation on WHS issues, and ensure that hazards are identified, reported and controlled using structured processes. When WHS responsibilities are understood and actively managed, organisations are better able to prevent incidents, protect workers, and demonstrate due diligence to regulators and stakeholders.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret and apply WHS legislation and organisational WHS systems in your work context, make informed judgements about risk, and recognise the practical requirements involved in maintaining compliance. You will be required to demonstrate how you explain key provisions of WHS legislation as they apply to the work area, work with organisational WHS policies, procedures and programs, and communicate WHS legal requirements, hazards and risk controls to your team. The assessment will also examine your understanding of WHS consultation mechanisms, the roles, duties and legal responsibilities of PCBUs, managers, supervisors and workers, and your contribution to identifying workplace hazards and supporting hazard reporting processes.

This assessment will confirm your understanding of how to conduct and support WHS risk assessment in line with organisational procedures and how to implement risk controls using the hierarchy of control measures. It will test your ability to monitor and report on the effectiveness and adequacy of existing WHS risk controls, identify WHS training needs, and arrange appropriate WHS learning opportunities so that workers can meet their WHS responsibilities. You will also be required to demonstrate how you provide workplace WHS learning, coaching and support to team members in everyday work activities.

You will also be assessed on how WHS incidents and data are managed to support compliance and improvement, including adhering to incident reporting, recording, investigation and response requirements, maintaining WHS records, and using aggregate WHS data to inform decisions and meet organisational obligations. The assessment will examine your understanding of procedures for assessing and responding to near misses, incidents, injuries and illnesses, and how you contribute to the continuous monitoring and improvement of WHS policies, procedures and programs so that they remain effective and compliant over time.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements of managing WHS policies, procedures and programs for legislative compliance, including understanding legal duties, supporting consultation and risk management, arranging WHS training, managing incidents and records, and contributing to continuous improvement of WHS systems—confirming your readiness to take a proactive and accountable role in WHS compliance and safety leadership within your work area.
