COURSE OVERVIEW:

Welcome to the Managing Workplace Bullying course. This program will equip you with the knowledge, insight, and practical strategies required to recognise, prevent, and respond to workplace bullying in all its forms. You will explore what is meant by workplace bullying, what workplace bullying is fundamentally about, and how behaviours, intentions, and organisational dynamics contribute to harmful patterns. This course also examines the significant consequences experienced by victims, including emotional distress, decreased performance, withdrawal from work, and long-term psychological harm.

This course begins by examining the behaviours and dynamics that constitute workplace bullying, including verbal bullying tactics such as insults, threats, humiliation, or persistent criticism; nonverbal bullying tactics such as exclusion, intimidation, or hostile gestures; practical bullying tactics including withholding information or resources; and performance-related bullying tactics that unfairly undermine or sabotage a person’s work. You will explore real experiences of workplace bullying and analyse the intentions that commonly motivate bullies, including power-seeking, insecurity, dominance, or resentment.

A further learning area focuses on analysing the dynamics of workplace bullying, helping you understand how patterns emerge, how power imbalances develop, and how organisational conditions can enable bullying behaviour. This section also examines your goals when responding to workplace bullying, providing clear guidance on how to respond appropriately, protect employees, and maintain a safe work environment. You will explore different ways staff might respond to bullying and the factors that influence whether those responses are effective or risky.

Another important component explores how to manage a workplace bully, including confronting bullying behaviour in a team member and addressing your challenges as the manager of a bully. You will examine structured approaches for handling meetings with bullies, how to prepare for these conversations, and how to conduct confrontation in a way that is assertive, fair, and compliant with organisational policies. This section also highlights successful approaches to dealing with workplace bullies and the key lessons managers must apply to prevent recurrence.

The course also examines the process of confronting a workplace bully, including how to structure a conversation, how to focus on behaviour rather than personality, and how to present clear expectations and consequences. You will analyse examples of workplace bullying, reviewing the dynamics and conclusions that can be drawn from actual scenarios, and develop skills to identify patterns early to prevent escalation. This section helps you build confidence in responding to difficult behaviours while maintaining professionalism and empathy.

A further area of learning explores the broader impacts of workplace bullying. You will examine the effects on team members, including lowered morale, reduced trust, fractured relationships, and reduced productivity. You will also explore the organisational impacts, such as increased turnover, reputational damage, decreased engagement, reduced performance, and higher costs associated with absenteeism, conflict, and complaints. This section highlights the organisational implications of unresolved bullying and the importance of leadership accountability.

The final component of the course focuses on the implications of workplace bullying for individuals, teams, and the organisation as a whole. You will explore why proactive prevention is essential, how early intervention protects wellbeing, and how managers can build cultures where bullying behaviours are not tolerated. This course emphasises the importance of strong policies, supportive processes, and leadership capability in ensuring psychological safety in the workplace.

By the end of this course, you will be able to identify bullying behaviours, analyse their dynamics, respond confidently to workplace bullying, manage bullies effectively, support affected team members, and implement strategies that strengthen organisational culture and prevent harmful behaviour from occurring.
