INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Nurture Babies & Toddlers in Children’s Education & Care course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in providing responsive, relationship-based care for babies and toddlers, including creating secure attachments through consistent routines, communicating effectively with infants and toddlers, supporting smooth transitions from home to care, and maintaining safe, healthy environments that promote wellbeing and development.

Nurturing babies and toddlers in children’s education and care involves more than meeting basic care needs; it requires intentional, emotionally attuned practice that supports attachment, belonging, and early learning through everyday moments. Babies and toddlers communicate largely through cues, routines, and non-verbal interaction, and educators must respond with calm consistency, respectful physical support, and predictable routines that reflect individual and cultural context. This work is important because early relationships and care experiences influence emotional regulation, trust, wellbeing, and the child’s capacity to explore and learn in a safe and supportive environment.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to provide consistent, positive care routines that support secure relationships, and to use one-to-one communication to promote learning, development, and wellbeing during daily routines. You will be required to demonstrate how you recognise and respond to baby and toddler cues with timely comfort and reassurance, and how you strengthen relationship-building practice through observation, discussion and reflection, linking attachment principles to infant and toddler development to guide your decisions and interactions.

This assessment will confirm your understanding of how to gather information from families to support transition from home to the education and care service, including routines, preferences and comfort items, and how to recognise signs of family stress during separation and respond appropriately to support the child’s emotional safety and family engagement. It will also assess your ability to support effective home-to-service transition by engaging babies and toddlers while families are present and maintaining consistent communication practices, and to communicate daily with families about the child’s activities, sleeping and eating patterns in line with service procedures and confidentiality expectations.

You will also be assessed on your capability to promote safe sleep by confirming sleep and rest arrangements with families, preparing safe sleep environments, and monitoring sleeping children according to policies and standards, and to prepare and settle babies and toddlers for sleep in ways that are responsive to individual patterns, rituals and wellbeing needs, including considerations for multiple children. This includes providing positive nappy-changing experiences by following service procedures, adapting to individual routines and using interactions that enhance relationships and learning, supporting sensitive toilet learning for toddlers through positive guidance and consistent approaches coordinated with families and educators, and promoting quality mealtime environments that respond to cues and support relaxed feeding interactions. The assessment will also examine your ability to apply approved standards for the safe storage, preparation, heating and serving of formula, breast milk and pre-prepared food and drinks, including cleaning of equipment and breastfeeding support protocols, and to create and maintain healthy and safe environments by providing resources for gross motor development, supervising appropriately, enabling safe exploration and managing hazards through calm, responsive practice.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can nurture babies and toddlers through consistent and culturally respectful routines, responsive communication and cue-based interactions that support attachment, safe and supportive transitions and family partnerships, safe sleep and mealtime practices aligned to required standards, positive care experiences that build security and learning, and safe environments that enable exploration and development—confirming your readiness to nurture babies and toddlers in children’s education and care practice.
