INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Perform Basic Demolition Safely for Component Removal course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in planning and carrying out basic demolition activities safely, including removing components in the correct sequence, managing site risks, and meeting workplace, regulatory and environmental requirements.

Performing basic demolition for component removal involves the controlled dismantling of non-structural building elements so that fixtures, fittings and components can be removed without causing unintended damage, instability, injury or uncontrolled collapse. This work requires careful interpretation of demolition plans, disciplined sequencing, and strict adherence to WHS controls because demolition tasks expose workers to hazards such as falling objects, sharp edges, dust, noise, manual handling strain, unstable materials, and unexpected contact with live services. Effective demolition practices are essential to protecting workers and others in the vicinity, preventing property damage, maintaining site order, enabling salvage and reuse where required, and ensuring waste is handled and disposed of lawfully.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret and apply demolition requirements, make informed judgements about hazard controls and safe work methods, and recognise the practical steps required to remove components safely under typical site conditions. You will be required to demonstrate how you interpret site demolition plans and sequence demolition work correctly, plan work to meet laws and regulations, NCC requirements, Australian Standards and workplace procedures, and apply WHS and environmental requirements throughout the demolition process.

This assessment will confirm your understanding of preparation and safety control requirements, including selecting and using PPE appropriate to demolition hazards, selecting demolition tools and equipment, completing serviceability checks and reporting faults, and inspecting the work site to identify hazards and determine risk controls. It will also assess your knowledge of confirming that existing services have been disconnected in accordance with site procedures, and installing and maintaining signs and barriers to control the demolition area and protect workers, visitors and other trades.

You will also be assessed on demolition execution and completion requirements, including identifying, isolating and reporting hazardous materials for separate handling and demolition, and applying appropriate safety considerations where asbestos or asbestos-containing materials may be suspected. The assessment will examine your understanding of workplace policies and quality standards, following demolition method statements and workplace procedures, and safely removing fixtures and fittings, ceilings and walls in the correct sequence. It will also confirm your knowledge of applying safe manual handling techniques when removing, carrying and placing components into storage or disposal areas, stacking salvaged components safely for storage, preparing components for transport, and completing clean-up and waste disposal in line with legislative and workplace requirements. Finally, the assessment will assess your ability to check, maintain and store tools and equipment correctly and report faults after task completion.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements for performing basic demolition safely for component removal, including planning and sequencing demolition tasks, applying WHS and environmental controls, managing services and hazardous materials, controlling work areas with signs and barriers, removing components safely using correct methods and manual handling, and completing clean-up and equipment maintenance requirements—confirming your readiness to perform basic demolition work reliably within construction site operations.
