INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Prepare Previously Coated Surfaces for Painting course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in planning and completing surface preparation of previously coated substrates so they are clean, sound, stable and ready for recoating in accordance with Australian Standards, WHS obligations, environmental requirements, manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures.

Preparing previously coated surfaces involves assessing existing paint systems and the underlying substrate, selecting fit-for-purpose preparation methods, removing failed or incompatible coatings, treating contaminants and defects, and ensuring the surface profile and condition will support adhesion and finish quality for the next coating system. This work is critical because most coating failures are caused by inadequate preparation, including poor adhesion, residual contamination, hidden moisture issues, degraded paint films, or untreated corrosion. Effective preparation protects the final finish, reduces rework and callbacks, and ensures that safety and environmental risks such as dust, chemical exposure and hazardous legacy coatings are controlled through correct planning and containment.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret and apply surface preparation requirements, make informed judgements about coating condition, substrate risks and preparation methods, and recognise the practical steps required to prepare surfaces safely and to specification prior to painting. You will be required to demonstrate how you review work instructions, plan preparation tasks for previously coated surfaces, and plan work to meet Australian Standards, WHS and legislative requirements, environmental obligations, manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures.

This assessment will confirm your understanding of safety preparation and risk control requirements, including selecting and fitting PPE appropriate to the task and hazard profile, inspecting the work site, assessing hazards and applying risk controls such as signage and barricades, and selecting surface preparation tools and equipment while completing serviceability checks and rectifying or reporting faults. It will also assess your knowledge of determining and testing the condition and nature of existing coatings and substrates, including performing adhesion testing to confirm whether coatings can remain, require partial removal, or must be fully stripped.

You will also be assessed on preparation method selection and surface treatment requirements, including selecting appropriate preparation methods based on environmental conditions, required finish quality and substrate type, and removing unwanted coatings and loose debris to achieve a sound surface ready for repair and recoating. The assessment will examine your understanding of identifying and managing hazards linked to lead, asbestos, solvents, chemicals, silica and dust through risk reduction procedures, and using techniques to remove contaminants such as dust, grease films, mild chalking, mild efflorescence and mould. It will also confirm your capability to address degraded paint films such as blistering, flaking, peeling, cracking and smoke-damaged coatings, recognise corrosion processes affecting metal substrates and apply techniques to protect metals during preparation and before recoating, and repair surface defects through stopping, filling, priming and sanding to achieve a smooth and consistent finish.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements for preparing previously coated surfaces for painting, including planning to standards and WHS obligations, selecting PPE and safe work controls, choosing and using appropriate tools and preparation methods, testing adhesion and coating condition, removing failed coatings and contaminants, managing hazardous materials risks, treating corrosion and repairing defects, and completing clean-up and storage processes including safe waste disposal and solvent handling—confirming your readiness to prepare coated surfaces to a professional recoating standard.
