INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Safely & Effectively Operate Explosive Power Tools (EPTs) course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in safely setting up, operating and maintaining indirect action explosive power tools, including selecting correct fasteners and charges, controlling hazards, and completing fastening tasks in accordance with safety, environmental, manufacturer and workplace requirements.

Safely and effectively operating explosive power tools involves using a controlled fastening system that relies on explosive charges to drive fasteners into base materials such as concrete or steel. Because EPTs present high-risk hazards such as projectile discharge, ricochet, noise, vibration, dust, accidental firing and misfires, safe operation requires strict adherence to WHS obligations, manufacturer instructions and task-specific controls. Effective EPT practice is essential to preventing serious injury, protecting others in the work area, avoiding damage to structures and services, achieving compliant fastening outcomes, and ensuring tools and explosive charges are handled, stored and maintained correctly.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret and apply EPT operating requirements, make informed judgements about safe setup and fastening decisions, and recognise the practical steps required to plan, carry out and complete EPT fastening tasks under typical site conditions. You will be required to demonstrate how you clarify task requirements, plan work activities, and apply WHS requirements including the use of safety plans, policies, SWMS, JSA, SDS and relevant safety manuals, as well as environmental requirements and legislative obligations relating to EPT activities.

This assessment will confirm your understanding of preparation and setup requirements, including selecting and placing safety signage and barricades to control the work area, calculating material quantity requirements for fastening tasks, completing pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer specifications, and selecting and correctly fitting PPE that matches EPT hazards and the work environment. It will also assess your knowledge of fastening selection and set-out, including choosing fasteners suited to job requirements, base material and the material being fixed, and setting-out fasteners using drawing information while complying with regulated minimum distances and edge distance requirements.

You will also be assessed on practical operating and completion requirements, including positioning and levelling materials, temporarily fixing or clamping to the designed location, selecting the correct EPT charge based on base type and required penetration, and installing and using EPT attachments and accessories such as manufacturer channels and rebates. The assessment will examine your understanding of correct loading procedures for fasteners and charges, safe tool operation in line with manufacturer and legislative requirements, checking penetration depth, adjusting power regulating devices, conducting test firing where required, and applying correct misfire procedures. It will also confirm your knowledge of post-operation requirements including stripping or assembling where required, cleaning and lubricating tools, completing periodic maintenance and logbook requirements, replenishing consumables, securing used and unused charges and fasteners, and completing environmentally responsible waste management and clean-up.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements for safely and effectively operating explosive power tools, including planning and controlling high-risk hazards, selecting appropriate PPE, fasteners and charges, setting out and completing compliant fastening tasks, managing misfire risks, and completing maintenance, storage and clean-up requirements—confirming your readiness to operate EPTs safely within construction site operations.
