INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the Safely Handle & Store Construction Materials course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in handling, moving and storing construction materials safely and efficiently, while meeting workplace requirements and complying with WHS, environmental and regulatory obligations.
Safely handling and storing construction materials involves planning work activities before materials are moved, understanding how task sequencing affects safety and productivity, and applying the correct controls to prevent injury, damage and environmental harm. It requires reviewing work instructions and task sequencing, complying with relevant laws, regulations, WHS and environmental requirements, and applying national construction codes, Australian Standards and workplace requirements to everyday materials handling decisions. The assessment will explore your ability to interpret manufacturers’ specifications and safety data sheets (SDS), select and use task-appropriate PPE, and select tools and equipment for materials handling while checking serviceability before use.
The course assessment focuses on your ability to prepare, handle and store materials using safe and methodical processes. You will be required to demonstrate how you sort materials by type, size, condition and safety requirements, including any SDS controls, and how you apply safe manual handling techniques for lifting, carrying, team lifting and moving loads. The assessment will also examine how you move materials to specified locations and prepare them for mechanical handling, including securing and stabilising materials using suitable stacking and restraint methods.
This assessment will confirm your understanding of safe storage practices and hazard controls. You will need to show how you stack materials clear of access ways for safe identification, retrieval and workflow efficiency, protect materials from physical and water damage during storage and handling, and prevent cross-contamination by maintaining material separation controls. The assessment will also examine how you identify and isolate hazardous materials for separate handling and control, and how you apply dust suppression, clean-up, waste disposal and tool/equipment storage and maintenance procedures to maintain a safe, compliant and orderly work area.
By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements of safely handling and storing construction materials, including planning and sequencing tasks, complying with WHS and environmental obligations, using SDS and manufacturer guidance, applying correct PPE and equipment checks, handling materials safely by manual and mechanical means, and maintaining safe storage and housekeeping controls—confirming your readiness to perform materials handling tasks safely in construction work environments.
