INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Safely Use Bricklaying & Blocklaying Tools & Equipment course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in selecting, checking, operating, maintaining and storing bricklaying and blocklaying tools and equipment safely and effectively, while meeting workplace safety and environmental procedures, manufacturer requirements and relevant compliance obligations.

Safely using bricklaying and blocklaying tools and equipment involves applying correct methods and controls when carrying out tasks such as mixing mortar, transporting materials, cutting masonry units and producing specified joint finishes. Because brick and block work can involve high-risk hazards including silica dust exposure, flying particles, sharp cutting edges, noise, electrical risks, manual handling strain and working near height edges, safe performance depends on disciplined planning, correct PPE selection, effective hazard controls and strict adherence to manufacturer operating limits. Effective tool use is essential to preventing injuries, avoiding equipment failure, maintaining consistent workmanship outcomes and ensuring tools remain safe and serviceable for ongoing use.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret and apply tool and equipment safety requirements, make informed judgements about selection, serviceability and safe operation, and recognise the practical steps required to use bricklaying and blocklaying tools in a controlled and compliant manner. You will be required to demonstrate how you select, fit and use PPE appropriate to each task, including hearing protection and respiratory protection for cutting, read and interpret work plans and specifications to confirm tool and equipment requirements, and apply workplace safety and environmental documentation and procedures before and during tool use, including job safety and environmental analysis requirements.

This assessment will confirm your understanding of hazard identification and control requirements, including recognising hazards associated with bricklaying and blocklaying tools and implementing controls for electrical safety, dust suppression, silica exposure reduction, noise reduction and working at heights. It will also assess your knowledge of clarifying job priorities and sequencing tasks with others on site, selecting suitable plant, equipment and tools for specific brick and block tasks, and identifying tool limitations from manufacturer instructions so correct use boundaries are applied.

You will also be assessed on practical inspection, setup and operational requirements, including conducting pre-operation checks to confirm guards, guides, controls and switches are fitted, functional and safe, inspecting hoses and electrical leads, confirming power tools are tested and tagged, and inspecting clamps, guides and holding equipment used during operation while removing unsafe items from service. The assessment will examine your understanding of tagging, isolating and reporting damaged tools and equipment to prevent use, levelling and stabilising static equipment such as cement mixers and cutting equipment in appropriate locations, and connecting electrical tools to a residual current device while applying safe connection and disconnection procedures.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements for safely using bricklaying and blocklaying tools and equipment, including selecting and using PPE, working to plans and specifications, applying workplace safety and environmental procedures, controlling hazards such as silica and electrical risks, inspecting and testing tools and accessories, setting up equipment safely, using key tools such as wheelbarrows, brick grabs, mixers and wet cut brick saws correctly, producing required joint finishes with hand tools, and completing clean-up, waste handling, maintenance and secure storage processes—confirming your readiness to use bricklaying and blocklaying tools safely in workplace operations.

TOPICS COVERED IN THIS ASSESSMENT:

This course assessment is based on the following topics:

1.    Selecting, fitting and using PPE appropriate to bricklaying and blocklaying tool and equipment tasks (including hearing protection and respiratory protection for cutting)

2.    Reading and interpreting work plans and specifications to confirm tool, equipment and work requirements

3.    Applying workplace safety and environmental documentation and procedures before and during tool use (including job safety and environmental analysis requirements)

4.    Identifying hazards and implementing control measures for bricklaying and blocklaying tool use (including electrical safety, dust suppression, silica exposure, noise reduction and working at heights)

5.    Clarifying job priorities and sequencing tasks with others on site to support safe and efficient tool use

6.    Selecting plant, equipment and tools for the task, including understanding what each item is used for on brick and block work

7.    Identifying tool and equipment limitations from manufacturer instructions and applying correct use boundaries
