COURSE OVERVIEW:
Welcome to the Speed Reading Mastery course. This program will equip you with the skills, techniques and mental habits needed to increase your reading speed while maintaining or improving comprehension. You will explore how speed reading works, why it is valuable in professional and academic contexts, and how to retrain your visual and cognitive processes to read more efficiently. The course also focuses on creating optimal reading environments, minimising common reading barriers, using physical and digital pacing tools, and improving judgment, comprehension and on-screen reading performance.
This course begins by exploring what speed reading is, why learning speed reading is important, and the relationship between reading speed and comprehension. You will examine why you need speed reading in modern information-rich environments, the factors that contribute to reduced reading rates, and how to maintain a positive attitude throughout your training. This section also covers how to prepare your reading environment, evaluates the basic reading problems (including regression, word-by-word reading, subvocalisation, insufficient vocabulary and lack of concentration), and introduces methods for evaluating your current reading ability.
Another learning area focuses on physical and cognitive techniques that retrain how the eyes and brain process text. You will explore how to use pointers or pacers for speed reading, how to reduce line-return times, and how to minimise page-turning delays. This section explains how to see groups of words as single meaningful units, how to derive meaning from clusters of words rather than individual terms, and how to use your hand to guide your eyes across wider spans of text. You will also explore skimming techniques such as identifying key words, recognising topic sentences, using zigzag hand movements, and applying rulers to maintain visual focus.
A further learning area examines the behaviours and mindset of dynamic readers who adjust their approach based on purpose, context and complexity. You will explore the most important questions to ask yourself before reading, during reading and after reading, helping you develop stronger metacognitive awareness. This section also covers how to improve your judgment of reading material, how to choose reading content that matches your goals, and the methods that increase comprehension while speed reading.
Another learning area focuses on on-screen speed reading, which poses unique challenges and requires adapted strategies. You will explore what is different about reading on screens, how to adapt paper-based strategies to digital environments, and how to develop on-screen reading prowess. This section examines hands-free on-screen pacers, highlighting pacers, scrolling pacers, and how to use the cursor as a pacing tool. You will also explore line-by-line on-screen pacers and steps to keep your eyes comfortable while reading digital text at high speeds.
By the end of this course you will be able to apply proven speed reading techniques, overcome common reading barriers, adjust your reading strategies to suit different purposes and formats, enhance both speed and comprehension, use physical and digital pacing tools effectively, and read more efficiently in both print and on-screen environments.
