INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Support People with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in providing safe, person-centred and rights-based support to people with ASD, in line with individualised plans, sector standards and organisational requirements.

Supporting people with ASD requires a sound understanding of the historical context, core characteristics and impacts of autism spectrum disorder, as well as current knowledge about causes, prevalence, common co-morbidities and evidence-based interventions across the lifespan. You need to be able to read and interpret individualised plans to identify an ASD diagnosis and core areas of functional impact, and to recognise key issues for people with ASD, their carers and families (including siblings) and how these influence support needs. The assessment will also draw on your ability to reflect on your own values and attitudes about autism, and to seek additional ASD-specific skills and knowledge as part of your professional practice.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to plan and implement person-centred, practical supports that respond to the way ASD is experienced by each individual. You will be required to demonstrate how you plan interventions and supports that align with the person’s preferences, needs and individualised plan, and implement support strategies that respond to restricted and repetitive behaviours, sensory processing needs and social communication differences. The assessment will examine how you support the person’s use of assistive technologies and other supports to promote independence, inclusion and participation, and how you recognise changes in the person’s needs, behaviours or responses to support and report these appropriately to a supervisor or relevant health professional. Your ability to apply positive behaviour support, use motivators for learning and build skills and resilience for people with ASD will also be assessed.

This assessment will further confirm your understanding of the broader context in which ASD support is delivered. You will be required to consider lifestyle, cultural safety, CALD and LGBTIQA+ factors when planning and delivering individualised ASD support, and to demonstrate a basic understanding of the diagnostic process for autism spectrum disorder, including the professionals involved, the DSM-5 domains and the relevance of secondary diagnoses. The assessment will also explore how you apply legal and ethical requirements in ASD support, including duty of care, dignity of risk, human rights, anti-discrimination obligations, mandatory reporting, privacy, confidentiality and work role boundaries.

You will also be assessed on how you practise within the service and systems environment that surrounds the person. This includes conducting support activities in accordance with sector values, philosophies, practice standards and organisational policies and procedures, and collaborating with supervisors and other professionals to ensure support remains safe, coordinated and high quality. You will need to show how you use organisational systems and processes to document your work, communicate concerns and contribute to continuous improvement in ASD support.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements of supporting people with autism spectrum disorder, including understanding ASD characteristics and impacts, working from individualised plans, planning and implementing tailored supports, taking account of cultural and identity factors, applying legal and ethical obligations, and collaborating effectively with others—confirming your readiness to provide respectful, informed and person-centred support to people with ASD in your workplace.
