INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the Work Effectively within a Community Development Framework course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in working with communities in ways that are participatory, empowering and aligned with the principles, values and processes of a community development framework.
Community development work is grounded in a clear purpose and set of values that focus on collective action, social justice, self-determination and the strengths of communities. It requires understanding the key features of a community development work plan and framework, the roles and responsibilities of workers operating within it, and the different community development approaches that may be used, including asset-based, rights-based, needs-based and gap-based approaches. Effective practice also depends on recognising how social, political and economic contexts shape community experiences, opportunities and barriers, and on supporting communities to identify, articulate and work towards their own priorities rather than imposing external agendas.
The course assessment focuses on your ability to apply community development principles in real practice contexts, and to recognise what it means to work with communities rather than for them. You will be required to demonstrate how you coordinate community consultation processes, including defining and managing scope, listening carefully to stakeholder stories and distinguishing between private and public issues, and determining stakeholder willingness to engage in public action while supporting safe and appropriate participation. The assessment will also examine how you respectfully respond to diverse viewpoints, address individual differences, and provide referrals for issues that fall outside the scope of community processes, in line with organisational policies and duty of care.
This assessment will confirm your understanding of how shared community priorities are identified and progressed, including researching, analysing and documenting priorities within group processes, and planning strategies in collaboration with communities to address those priorities. You will be expected to show how you identify and document relevant structures, resources and supports that can be mobilised to maximise community outcomes, and how you provide clear, accessible information to groups and individuals to support informed decision-making. The assessment will also explore your role in advocating and lobbying for community-based outcomes where appropriate, while maintaining accountability to both communities and your organisation.
You will also be assessed on how you manage and facilitate group discussions and engagement processes within a community development framework, including creating safe spaces for participation, managing dynamics and conflict, and enabling communities to lead and own decisions. This includes demonstrating how you reflect on and review your own practice, recognising how your values, assumptions and behaviours influence community development processes and outcomes, and identifying ways to strengthen your contribution to community-led work.
By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements of working effectively within a community development framework, including understanding its purpose and approaches, supporting communities to define and pursue their own priorities, coordinating consultation and engagement processes, linking communities with structures and resources, and critically reflecting on your practice—confirming your readiness to contribute to ethical, participatory and outcomes-focused community development work.
